Maldivia 45 Foiling: Flying Comfort, With Honest Numbers
A transparent comparison of the foiling and planing Maldivia 45
The Maldivia 45 is now available as a foiling version for operators whose guests put comfort first. In waves up to about 1 metre, the foils lift the hull clear of the water, so passengers barely feel the chop. The foiling M45 also uses about 15% less energy and gains about 18% more range per charge.

Foiling has a price, and we want our clients to see it and understand the backgound. Compared with the planing M45 Electric, the foiling version costs about €46,000 more per boat and year in Europe and about €75,000 more in the Maldives. The extra cost comes from the higher purchase price, more service, and more days out of service. A comfort surcharge of about €0.65 to €1 per passenger trip covers the difference.
The standard hull is already smooth. In our October 2026 sea trial, the planing M45 held 28 knots in 0.5–1 metre waves and 27 knots in 1–1.5 metre waves without slamming.
Four foil concepts, one honest choice
Before offering a foiling M45, we studied four ways to add foils to the hull.
Fixed foils with the standard inboard drives. This is the simplest and cheapest option. With the drives inside their protective nozzles, the foils can lift only part of the boat’s weight. The energy saving was 5% at best, too little to pay back the investment. Fixed foils also add drag at low speed and increase draft, which counts against them in shallow lagoons.
Retractable foils. These solve the draft problem, so the boat can still reach shallow harbours. In return, they add weight, cost and maintenance.
Passive foil assistance. We looked at the classic surface-piercing V-foils of the Soviet Raketa and Kometa boats and at foil-assisted catamarans. These systems need no electronics and right themselves automatically, and many of them served for decades. The saving stays at around 10–15%, because the hull still carries part of the weight.
Fully foiling with pod drives and active flight control. This is the state of art technology approach used by Candela, Navier and Artemis, and it gives the smoothest ride. It also brings the most complexity: computer-controlled foils, deeper exposed drives, and a separate certification.
We chose the fully foiling concept for the M45 Foiling, because comfort is the reason to choose it. For an already efficient hull like the M45’s, we put the realistic energy saving at about 15%, and do not compare to heavy Polyester/glassfiber boats.
